Things you might not know about me …

I have professional dance training and have been involved in dance and fitness for much of my life. Way back in the 80’s I taught dance fitness classes in the Kings Road in London at the start of the aerobics wave and taught my first yoga classes at Putney Baths.

What that means is, I don’t just do yoga to keep fit!

As we get older, it’s really important to not just stretch and be flexible, but to tone, condition and strengthen the muscles so that they can keep our bones in place and keep us moving in alignment, not to mention the benefits for cardiovascular health, mental health and for our blood chemistry – think blood sugar levels, hormones etc.

So, with this in mind, I am sharing with you some other ways to use movement as medicine and to be in the best shape of your life!

A couple of years ago, I ventured into Yoga HIIT (YogaShred ®) training

Yoga moves combined with high-intensity interval training. One of the leading-edge methods of fitness which is beneficial to bodies of all ages.

Gone are the days of long cardio sessions! HIIT’s many benefits include the time effective way you can bring interval training into your fitness regime. Who wants to be spending hours in class or at the gym. Yay!

This year, I have gone back to my dancing roots with
BARRE.

Barre has its origins with Lotte Berk – a famous name with dancers my age! After a career as a ballet dancer, she created a method of fitness incorporating Ballet moves.

This evolved into a style called BARRE, which combines the benefits of Pilates, yoga and ballet. It’s known as a sculpting and conditioning class. It changes the strength and shape of your body in a time-effective engaging way.

The Benefits of Barre

Barre work consists of a series of targeted strengthening exercises that tone and firm the whole body.

Isometric movement target the tiny muscles around our joints which create joint stability, and that often get ignored in other forms of exercise.

During class, you will be working multiple muscle groups simultaneously during your full body workout.

It’s also low impact, so its gentler on your joints, yet will leave you feeling you have done a workout without feeling you need rehabilitation.

Long term commitment means better results over time and a low injury risk, plus all the benefits including strong shapely muscles, especially through the legs.

Repetition of these small movements over and over builds muscle endurance – meaning, the more you go to class the longer you can hold your posture in the tough positions.

Talking of posture, Barre improves your posture by strengthening your core and your support muscles so that you will begin to feel tall, graceful and Darcy Bussel like, achieving proper alignment of your hips, spine shoulders and head.

The Benefits of Hiit (Yoga Shred®)

HIIT targets fast-twitch muscle fibers that yoga does not. Yoga works on mostly slow-twitch fibers, which build stamina and endurance.

Fast-twitch muscle fibers are what lift, tighten, define and tone your body, help you get stronger enabling movement without injury.

HIIT optimizes your cardio capacity, your ability to process oxygen, better than anything else. Cardio optimization is the foundation of all health.

With the addition of HIIT, we’ll use the Tabata style of Hiit, you’ll be able to do all other exercises, like yoga, running, cycling, etc — with more ease, too!

Yoga Shred® moves are Sadie Nardini’s signature creations. Each separate type of move (Side Plank Curls, Fists of Fire Lunges, etc…) are called a “Yoga Shred” or a “Shred”. Shreds are done in blocks of 20 seconds activity / 10 seconds rest, for up to 8 rounds. Yoga Shred® as the style and “Yoga Shreds: or “Shreds” as single moves, are created to be safer and better- aligned versions of regular HIIT forms. Even our Yoga Shred® Burpees offer less impact on the shoulders, knees and back! Yoga Shreds can be done by anyone, but a bonus is that they super-strengthen yoga students for their poses. They can help break through strength plateaus on the mat. Your students (and you!) will feel like a rockstar when you get on the mat. Yoga Shreds create stronger bones through mindful impact. It’s become epidemic in yoga classes not to create impact, but without it, joints and bones become brittle.
