The Radiance Retreat – Let’s Hygge!
Years ago when I first started to do Restorative Yoga, it was a special treat from time to time.
Over the years it has become a necessity.
Being still but not asleep is quite challenging for some and can feel like a pointless waste of time or even an indulgence that we can’t quite allow ourselves to do on a regular basis.
Yet, what is really true is that this practice is the equivalent of turning a device off and back on to get rid of glitches. It’s about de fragging ourselves, having a reboot and emptying the ‘trash’.
I’d go as far as to say that it should be made compulsory!
The upcoming winter version of The Radiance Retreat is nearly here and coincides with the shortest days of the year.
Restorative yoga and the Danish concept of “Hygge” (pronounced Hoo gah), are perfect partners for an afternoon of self-care and tranquility.
It’s very much about going inwards to find peace, contentment and connection with yourself and others, especially during the long months of winter.
To immerse oneself into the concept of Hygge, one must focus and pay attention on setting the right environment, of selecting the quality of the items around you, which makes your space, however small, the perfect place to dwell for these moments of inward reflection.
Part of the specialness of the space you create, is the element of ritual that unfolds, a signal to your brain and nervous system that enables you to enter the process with intent.
Meik Weiking, from the happiness research institute in Copenhagen – an expert in ‘Hygge’ says: “We focus on the small things that really matter, including spending more quality time with friends and family”.
To spend ‘quality time’ with friends and family requires us to be present with ourselves before we join with others.
Let’s practice with a Yoga Hygge!
Gentle yoga, restorative poses and some journalling with your favorite things about you and a large mug of your favorite tea.
